BALD FACTS: -

Male pattern baldness is not a disease. Ones genes determine the baldness pattern just like the colour of ones eyes or skin.

Hence baldness once it starts cannot be checked by any means, but it can be effectively cured by the well known scientific procedure of Hair Transplantation.

Though the first transplants in the world were carried out in America over 40 years ago the procedure was brought to India about 28 years back when this clinic was established in Delhi in 1980.

What is Hair Transplant?

The surgical procedure of transferring your own living hair to grow permanently in areas of baldness is called Hair Transplantation. It is not possible yet to transplant someone elses hair on you so one has to have some hair at the sides or back of the head from where hair roots can be taken for transplantation. It can also be done in the area which is not completely bald but where some hairs are still present. Since, all the roots are not taken out from one place; the donor area is not noticeable and looks the same.

Technique
The hair transplantation started with punch grafting containing a group of hair roots in a single punch way back in 1959. Over the years refinements kept taking place so much so that now even single hair roots (follicles) are also transplanted.Decidedly this gives a more uniform look with aesthetically better appearence . The cost factor also increased significantly if one had to opt for micro - follicular transplants particularly over a large area. Every body may not be in a position to afford a hefty sum.

So Options
1.Microfollicular grafting all over the bald area if one is easy on expenditure.
2. Microfollicular grafting in the front to make a pleasing natural looking hairline and Minigrafting over the rear area, which also looks quite natural but cuts down the total cost.
3. Microfollicular grafting for a front hairline and standard grafting for the back areas with very good acceptable results, very common affordable option.
4. Standard grafting all over the bald area, good acceptable results with real significant cuts in the cost.

Everyone is having Micro-follicular grafting all over is a myth, one has to see various options and choose the best for himself in considering the total cost factor etc.

Hair transplant surgery or other cosmetic surgery has essentially the same requirments as surgery for other reasons.

What one looks for?
The professional qualification, experience, especially of the surgeon and reputation of the place . So dont get fooled by high voltage advertisments for all you know there may be "MunnaBhais" lurking around the corner, to fool and conn people because they bade goodbye to medical Ethics a long time ago. They have never held a surgeons knife in their hand before. They employ iliterate Raw hands to do a shody job. So checkup the qualifications, experience and specialisation of the operator and bonafides of the staff. They may be doing just one procedure of hair Transplantation because they are not versatile trained surgeons and are unable to do any other cosmetic Surgery. So you should insist on checking their credentials and satisfy your self.

Operating Sessions
The duration can vary depending upon the area of baldness and one's personal selection of the options in transplantation. When skin Strip Hair root harvesting technique is employed, the stress was to implant the maximum number of grafts per session and hence the so called Mega sessions etc., a large number of staff working practically the whole day with the fair amount of discomfort to the patient, since the hair follicles once harvested could not be carried over for the next day. With FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) their is no such compulsion and one can opt for shorter sessions ( a few hours at a time) and have a pleasing experience.The remaining area being transplanted the next day.

Cost Factor
Obviously the Micro grafting is more time demanding to cover the same area so higher the cost.Roughly a graft could cost around an average of Rs. 50/- (US $ 1), If the number required is larger, the cost will be apparently less. The exact cost obviously can be worked out after having a look on the size of the bald area and the option which a person has chosen for himself. If the requirment is for standard grafts, it works out at the rate of Rs. 700/- per Sq.inch of the area.

Is It Painful?  NO.
The operation is done by making the skin numb by local anaesthesia which eliminates all discomfort during the transplant surgery. The person undergoing the procedure is awake and conscious all the time but no pain is experienced.


How long it takes?
The procedure by itself can take one to few hours depending upon the size of the area to be transplanted. The person leaves the clinic as soon as the procedure is finished. There is no hospital admission required. There is hardly any discomfort following the Hair Transplant Surgery and one can attend to the office routine from the next day itself. If the area is large, the total time required is worked out depending upon patients requirement and may require a stay in Delhi for 2-3 days for those coming from outside.

Any alternatives to Transplant?

Hair weaving, bonding, wigs or hair pieces are the artificial devices to cover the bald areas. The special shampoos, lotions, oil and herbal medicines, they just dont seem to work.
                Age is no bar to undergo hair transplantation; one should just have normal health. It is also done in selected old cases of Alopecias (Hair Loss) due to disease, scanty eyebrows, on the upper lip and face and to cover bad scars on the head resulting from injuries or burns. Hair Transplants are done in women too.

 For alopecia Areata, even Medical Treatment is also done in early cases with very gratifying results.

    There are other procedures carried out to remove or cover the bald area in the nature of

1.   Scalp reduction in which the bald area is excised surgically and the hairy skin margins are approximated. It is quite economical as compared to the other in total costs and can be very useful but in selected cases.

2.  Flaps [Rotation skin Flaps]. Portion of thick hair bearing skin near the bald areas are surgically mobilized and brought on to the bald areas. The covering is as thick as of the natural hair and the procedure can be very rewarding again in selected cases.

Things to Watchout[Bad Scars]: -
        The procedure of skin strip harvesting from the individuals back scalp practiced by inexperienced or unqualified surgeons can leave really ugly permanent scars at the back [refer photo] which are hard to improve. We keep on getting such case who had ventured to have the hair grafted without judging the antecedents of the operating surgeon or the clinic.

The newer method of FUE [Follicular Unit Extraction] has gained popularity because it is devoid of the long ugly scars at the back of the Head. But it requires real long experience & expertise to harvest the small grafts. We specialise in this at our facility.
